  • Paul Hemphill, 73, a novelist and journalist, died of oral cancer in Atlanta, Ga. The focuses of his writing were country music, sports, and the haunted legacy of the South. He was the author of 15 books, including his 1993 memoir, Leaving Birmingham.
  • Journalists will no longer be a part of the voting process for the Tony Awards. In the past, they have made up less than 10 percent of the total votes, but the committee has now voted against having them be able to cast a vote from this point on.
